Slap of Authority

His entire body ached and he could no longer distinguish between the aches caused by the crash and the pains caused by Tsucgimoto. Burying the pain, they raced through the forest using the still unconscious guards as breadcrumbs.

Once inside the car, he made two radio calls: one to a concerned Bertrand and the other to an angry special agent.

Because of the science used in the radiophone, Grayson’s language violated several federal laws for the broadcast of profanity, obscenity and the making of threats.

“You tipped our hat, you idiot.”

“No, I tipped my hat. Your hat was having coffee and saying things like, ‘they’re not a threat.’ Remember?”

“The instant you knew something, you should have notified me.”

“I didn’t have the proper forms.”

“Damn it, Dam! We’re on the same side here. You have to tell me …”

“I’m telling you now. The Nazis have Tesla’s weapons just like you said they didn’t.”

“I’m sending a team out to the camp.”

“You’ll never get there in time.”

He could hear Grayson’s frustration through the silence. There was a sigh and the agent continued, “What should we do?”

“Storm the Bund building. They meet behind Hitler’s mustache.”

“I’m sorry?”

“I don’t have time to explain. And look into a man called Tsucgimoto.” Stockwell disconnected the call. He did have time to explain but it was more fun not to. He had given Grayson enough to move on. Damian slumped back in his seat.

“You didn’t mention me.” Alice was behind the wheel.

“No, I didn’t.”

“I appreciate that. It could jeopardize my story.”

“Your story is finished.”

“I beg your par …”

“You heard me. It’s time to back off before it gets you killed.”

“Me? You’re the one that can hardly move.”

“That stupid prick thing. What kind of Chinese voodoo was that?”

“I think he was Japanese.”

“No. They are easy to confuse, though.”

“I …”

“Enough. We need to get back to the city. Don’t be afraid to use that pedal on the right.” Stockwell closed his eyes as she opened the throttle on the massive engine.

He had to get back to New York. He had to speak with Tesla. He’d feel better when they crossed the state line.
